Dear St. Joseph Parishioners,
It is with a great deal of gratitude that I write this piece for the bulletin. You have all been so very present inside my hotel room! Dad’s passing away was hard of course but surrounded by grace. The people here in NZ managing the isolation are just so nice. When they heard it was my birthday I received food and a balloon and many best wishes. Then when my Father passed away on Christmas Day so many kind words. The nurse whom I see every day explained that her dad was a very solid Catholic, Mass every week! You have to remember NZ is a very secular country so these were lovely ‘touches of His grace’. Fr Simon (little brother) and I will do our yearly 8 day silent retreat while we complete quarantine. Then the plan is to the celebrate the funeral on January 4th.
Thank you again for your prayers and know you are in mine!
Happy New Year!
Dad carried this prayer around in his wallet:
An "Ancient Prayer to Saint Joseph"
O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in thee all my interests and desires.
O St. Joseph, assist me by thy powerful intercession and obtain for me all spiritual blessings through thy foster Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord, so that, having engaged here below thy heavenly power, I may offer thee my thanksgiving and homage.
O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating thee and Jesus asleep in thine arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near thy heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath.
St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me.
