“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1213)

Baptism of Children

 The Church requires “that there be a well-founded hope that the child will be brought up in the Catholic religion.” (Can. 868.1) Parents contact the Parish Office and express the desire for Baptism for their child. Please do not set a date for a child's Baptism (and finalizing travel plans for grandparents and godparents) before meeting with the Pastor well in advance of any date you have in mind.

Note: When a family is not registered in the parish, the office first checks if they belong to another parish. An appointment is then scheduled with the pastor, whose role is to accompany the family in their faith journey while respecting their right to the sacraments. During the meeting, the pastor will ask why they are not seeking baptism at their own parish. If there is a valid reason, the pastor will request permission from the family’s parish and ensure proper formation for the sacrament. The pastor also confirms that the family is well disposed, sincerely desiring the sacraments for their child.

Bautismo de Niños

La Iglesia exige “que exista una esperanza bien fundada de que el niño será educado en la religión católica.” (Can. 868 §1).
Los padres deben comunicarse con la Oficina Parroquial y expresar su deseo de bautizar a su hijo. Por favor, no consideren fijar la fecha del Bautismo de un niño (ni concretar planes de viaje para abuelos y padrinos) antes de reunirse con el párroco con suficiente anticipación a la fecha que tengan en mente.

Nota: Cuando una familia no está registrada en la parroquia, la oficina primero verifica si pertenece a otra parroquia. Luego se agenda una cita con el párroco, cuyo papel es acompañar a la familia en su camino de fe, respetando al mismo tiempo su derecho a los sacramentos. Durante la reunión, el párroco preguntará por qué no buscan el bautismo en su propia parroquia. Si hay una razón válida, el párroco solicitará permiso a la parroquia de la familia y se asegurará de que reciban la formación adecuada para el sacramento. El párroco también confirma que la familia está bien dispuesta, deseando sinceramente los sacramentos para su hijo.

Godparents

At least one godparent is required. “For the grace of Baptism to unfold, the parents’ help is important. So too is the role of the godfather and godmother, who must be firm believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized - child or adult - on the road of Christian life. Their task is a truly ecclesial function (officium). The whole ecclesial community bears some responsibility for the development and safeguarding of the grace given at Baptism.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1255)

 A godparent is to be a witness, an inspiration, a rock solid example of what it means to be a Roman Catholic in today’s world. That means that the person must be a Catholic not only in name but by the life they lead each day.

In the Code of Canon Law, a book with the laws that govern and guide the life of the Catholic Church, there are specific regulations regarding sponsors (godparents) for the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation.

Padrinos

Se requiere al menos un padrino.
“Para que la gracia del Bautismo se desarrolle, es importante la ayuda de los padres. También lo es la función del padrino y la madrina, que deben ser creyentes firmes, capaces y dispuestos a ayudar al recién bautizado —niño o adulto— en el camino de la vida cristiana. Su tarea es una verdadera función eclesial (officium). Toda la comunidad eclesial tiene cierta responsabilidad en el desarrollo y la custodia de la gracia recibida en el Bautismo.”
(Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 1255)

Un padrino o madrina debe ser un testigo, una inspiración y un ejemplo sólido de lo que significa ser católico romano en el mundo de hoy. Esto implica que la persona debe ser católica no solo de nombre, sino también por la vida que lleva cada día.

En el Código de Derecho Canónico, libro que contiene las leyes que rigen y orientan la vida de la Iglesia Católica, existen normas específicas sobre los padrinos para los sacramentos del Bautismo y de la Confirmación.

The requirements for godparents are:

•  not less than sixteen years of age.
• a Catholic who has received the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
• registered and active members of their parish.
• living in conformity with Catholic morals and in good standing with the Catholic Church by their Parish (if married, proof of married according to the laws of the Church).
• may not be the mother or father of the person to be baptized.
• Finally, they must obtain a Sponsor Certificate, attesting to their fulfilling the stated requirements, from the parish in which they are a registered member. 

Before asking someone to take on the role of a sponsor, please be sure they fulfill the requirements of the Church.

Los requisitos para ser padrino o madrina son:

• Tener al menos dieciséis años de edad.
• Ser católico y haber recibido los sacramentos de la Primera Comunión y la Confirmación.
• Estar inscrito y ser miembro activo de su parroquia.
• Vivir de acuerdo con la moral católica y estar en plena comunión con la Iglesia Católica (si está casado, debe estar casado conforme a las leyes de la Iglesia).
• No ser el padre ni la madre de la persona que va a ser bautizada.
• Finalmente, debe obtener un Certificado de Padrino, que acredite el cumplimiento de los requisitos indicados, de la parroquia donde esté inscrito.

Antes de pedirle a alguien que asuma el papel de padrino o madrina, asegúrense de que cumpla con los requisitos de la Iglesia.
